HARARE, Zimbabwe— UNDP Zimbabwe, in partnership with the Government of Zimbabwe and the Green Climate Fund, has released a project update showing expanded market opportunities and improved climate resilience for communities in Southern Zimbabwe.

The March–April 2026 update for the Climate Resilient Livelihoods Project details how farmers are increasing production through climate-proofed irrigation systems. Crops grown under the program include maize, sugar beans, wheat, Michigan pea beans, and chilli peppers.

Private-sector partnerships are linking farmers to markets through contract farming arrangements that provide inputs, technical support, and greater price certainty.

According to the report, 188 farmers were trained in market-led production to identify buyers, understand market requirements, and align production with demand.

Climate information services were also scaled up during the period. 153 extension officers and technical staff were trained to develop localized agro-meteorological advisories to support climate-smart decision-making.

The report states that 98% of AGRITEX officers now use weather and climate forecasts in their advisory work, and 99% disseminate information to women, men, and youth.

Women farmers are benefiting from labor-saving technologies including threshers, augers, and grinder-choppers, which the project says reduce drudgery, save time, and create new income opportunities.

Financial resilience is being strengthened through Internal Savings and Lending groups. The update reports 3,400 members across 351 groups, with women making up 79% of participants. The groups are helping households save, invest, and cope with climate shocks.

The project showcased its innovations at ZITF 2026 to build partnerships and promote practical climate-resilient solutions to a wider audience.

“Climate resilience is not only about helping communities withstand shocks; it is also about enabling them to thrive economically,” said Rungano Benza, Project Manager for the Climate Resilient Livelihoods Project.
