Whether it's waiting outside the wrong entrance to a shopping centre, standing on opposite sides of the road or frantically trying to explain your location over chat while your driver circles the block, finding one another has become one of the most common frustrations in ride-hailing.
To help solve this, global mobility platform inDrive has launched two new app features, Panorama View and Recommended Pickup Points, in Johannesburg and Cape Town for the time being, making South Africa the first market in the world to roll them out.
The new features are designed to make it easier for passengers and drivers to connect from the moment a ride is requested, reducing confusion around pickup locations and helping journeys start more smoothly.
Panorama View adds a real street-level image of the selected pickup point directly into the booking process. Instead of relying solely on a map pin, passengers can tap their pickup location and step into a 360-degree panoramic view of your exact meeting point.
Whether that's a building entrance, landmark or street corner, having dynamic rendering of your location makes it easier to identify where to wait and increases safety. If street-level imagery is unavailable, the panorama icon won't appear, and passengers see the pickup map as usual.
Recommended Pickup Points works behind the scenes to improve accuracy even before a driver is assigned, helping to direct drivers to places where passengers are easier to find and reducing unnecessary delays, missed pickups and time spent searching for one another.
Should passengers or drivers need to clarify anything further, they can still communicate through the in-app chat.
inDrive country representative, Ashif Black, says that these new features will help alleviate some of the pickup challenges both drivers and passengers often run into.
“The beginning of a ride sets the tone for the entire journey together, and being able to find one another efficiently without delay ensures the driver isn’t wasting time and, by extension, earning capability, and that passengers aren’t late getting where they need to be or stuck waiting longer than necessary in potentially unsafe locations.”
“You know that big garage on the right?”
The launch responds to a challenge familiar to many South Africans, where many people tend to rely on location points like a landmark, petrol station or even a well-known business name to explain where they are.
While this may be a uniquely South African way to navigate the roads, it may cause confusion and even frustration for a driver who may be unfamiliar with the place.
inDrive aims to reduce the time passengers spend waiting outside, minimise unnecessary messaging between passengers and drivers and help drivers spend less time circling busy city blocks or navigating difficult access points by combining clearer visual information with more accurate pickup suggestions.
Beyond improving the pickup experience for passengers, more accurate pickup points are also expected to improve driver utilisation over time.
As passengers set Point A more precisely and have a clearer understanding of exactly where they will be picked up, waiting times should decrease, enabling drivers to complete more trips each day while creating a smoother and more efficient experience for everyone.
“In major cities where people are often meeting at shopping centres, office parks, apartment complexes and busy transport hubs with several entrances or pickup points within a very small area, these features help make the pickup process that much quicker and smoother,” says Black.
In Johannesburg and Cape Town, passenger ride requests are largely concentrated around major shopping and business hubs.
In Johannesburg, Eastgate Shopping Centre leads by ride volume, followed by central Johannesburg, Jabulani Mall and Braamfontein, while other major destinations such as Mall of Africa and Sandton City also feature among the top pick-up points. In Cape Town, Liberty Promenade records the highest ride volume, followed by central Cape Town, Zevenwacht Mall and Canal Walk Shopping Centre, highlighting the role of shopping centres and commercial hubs as key starting points for inDrive journeys.
“Since the beginning of a ride often sets the tone for the entire journey, helping passengers and drivers identify the same meeting point before the journey even begins makes those first moments far more pleasant and simpler for both parties,” Black adds.
Panorama View and Recommended Pickup Points are now available to inDrive users in Johannesburg and Cape Town in the app, with availability continuing to expand as street-level imagery becomes more available across additional areas
