Government Intensifies Livestock Shield as Masvingo Moves Ahead of Drought

Government has intensified livestock protection measures in Masvingo Province, rolling out an aggressive anthrax vaccination campaign that has already surpassed its target, while accelerating diptank rehabilitation, water development and livestock feed preservation ahead of the anticipated El Niño-induced drought. 

The Department of Veterinary Services has vaccinated more than 160 000 cattle against anthrax, exceeding the initial target of 130 000, as part of a proactive strategy to prevent disease outbreaks before drought conditions worsen.

Speaking during an anthrax vaccination programme at Makurumidze Diptank in Zimuto, Provincial Veterinary Officer Dr Kremar Manyetu said Government was targeting historic anthrax hotspots where dormant spores are likely to resurface as grazing diminishes. 

He said the programme has expanded beyond traditional hotspots, with 120 diptanks undergoing rehabilitation this year, alongside borehole drilling, installation of water troughs, hay baling, fodder production and farmer training to strengthen livestock resilience. 

Farmers have welcomed the intervention, describing it as a lifeline that is safeguarding their livelihoods and protecting the province's livestock industry before the drought takes hold.
